On May 18th, I testified in front of Congress in defense of abortion rights for everyone. And I’m proud to say that I took our unapologetic and bold approach to abortion advocacy all the way to the US Capitol.
But one thing that I said got a lot of attention. It’s one of Avow’s central principles, and I don’t want anyone else’s interpretation of my words to overshadow why I said what I said.
I was asked, by anti-abortion extremists who are trying to distract us from the fact that they are working to completely ban abortion in our entire country, if men can get abortions.
And I gave them the answer, because it is simple: yes.
Some people were upset by this. The clip has been splattered on Fox News and anti-abortion websites and email blasts.
I know this because my voicemail, social media messages, and inbox are full of people and their hatred - for abortion rights, and also for our trans and nonbinary community.
Here’s the thing: trans and nonbinary people have abortions. That’s why we use gender inclusive language. It’s that simple.
At Avow, we aren't interested in winning abortion rights if trans and nonbinary Texans aren't included in that win. That’s not how liberation works.
