In November 2024, Austin was elected to the Hayward Unified School District Board of Education with 18,762 votes after building a broad, worker-led coalition powered by educators, labor unions, parents, and community advocates. He was the only candidate endorsed by every organized labor group and every Democratic organization involved in the race — without exception.
Austin’s victory marked the first time a non-incumbent unseated the city’s longest-serving conservative trustee, overcoming the kind of smear tactics too often directed at LGBTQ+ candidates. But Austin’s story has always been about resilience.
The biological child of two addicts, Austin experienced housing insecurity and periods of homelessness growing up. Public schools, educators, and community support helped change the trajectory of his life — and today, he fights to make sure every student has the same opportunity to succeed.
Since taking office, Austin has become a leading voice for transparency, equity, labor partnerships, and protecting frontline student services during one of the most difficult budget crises in district history. He helped secure more than $150,000 in early childhood education and literacy support for Hayward students, championed a Project Stabilization Agreement to keep Measure I bond dollars supporting local union jobs, and helped raise critical funds for Measure G to protect neighborhood schools.
Outside of the Board of Education, Austin serves in local government and leads Alameda County’s longest-running LGBTQ Pride organization, continuing his lifelong commitment to public service and community empowerment.
Now, Austin is asking for your support once again. Together, we can continue building schools — and a community — where every student feels seen, supported, and valued.
