Kevin Jura for Somerville City Council, At-Large

Kevin Jura is a proven leader and innovator who gets results. He was appointed as a Justice of the Peace by Governor Charlie Baker in 2018. He is also a paramedic with over 20 years of EMS experience and was previously an A/Lieutenant with the Florida Highway Patrol. In Kevin’s over 20 years of Public Safety (EMS, Fire, Law Enforcement), Public Health, and Emergency Management career, he has served on several national, regional, statewide, and local task forces, workgroups, committees, and projects. Furthermore, he has held leadership positions at all levels of government and has presented at national and regional conferences. Furthermore, he has been certified at the SES/GS-15 levels for federal government employment.


As a public health, public safety, and emergency management subject matter expert he completely revamped a US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) program, for the state of Maryland, that ensured protection for its over 8 million residents, commuters, and visitors. In doing so he set a gold standard for the national program. Additionally, his work was used by the CDC as a “Best Practices” and was invited several times to speak at the National Preparedness Summit.

 

As a homeowner, Kevin understands the hard work and sacrifice it takes to build a home. He wants to assure our children have pathways to stable jobs, home ownership, and are able call Somerville their home in the future.


Kevin’s family instilled in him a sense of service to his community. Today, Kevin is serving on the Board of Directors for the Boy Scouts of America. He has also previously served on the Boards in leadership positions with the American Red Cross, Strength for Service, and several other national, regional, and local non-profit organizations.


Kevin is currently attending the Harvard University Extension School to obtain a degree in government. He is focusing on public administration and leadership. He has previously been an adjunct instructor at Pensacola State College and Northern Virginia Community College. He believes that education is a right and should be available to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay.


Kevin earned his Eagle Scout in 1996 and was made a National Outstanding Eagle Scout in 2015. He has also been recognized several times by the Commandant of the US Coast Guard, including the US Coast Guard’s Presidential Unit Citation, the Meritorious Unit Commendation with Operational “O” and gold star, the Meritorious Team Commendation, the Commandant’s Letter of Commendation with star, and the US Coast Guard Academy Admissions Recruiting Badge. He has also been recognized by the Secretary of the US Department of the Interior and the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response for the US Department of Health and Human Services. Additionally, he has been recognized by the Governors of Kentucky and Maryland for his outstanding work and contributions to the nation and several states. Finally, in 2018, he was elected as a Fellow to the United Kingdom’s Royal Society of Arts (FRSA).
