One in five children in Knox County are living below the poverty level. Approximately 13% live with some type of disability. Additionally, cancer (of all types) was the leading cause of death in Knox County in 2013. The breast cancer mortality rate in Knox County is 5.2 deaths per 100,000 greater among black females compared to white females.
The health priorities and areas of concern for Knox County include tackling health disparities by increasing education programming and awareness raising, and working with allies and partners to provide access, for those who are uninsured or underinsured, to health services in areas that Rescuing Health is also working in, particularly in regards to those areas of support that are not typically covered by other institutions, health providers, or health support agencies, such as support to cover living costs (housing, utilities, transportation, childcare, etc) in addition to healthcare costs.
With your help, we can facilitate access to services through grassroots interventions – by regularly coordinating with those services, service providers, legislators, policy makers and educators community members would not ordinarily have access to. Our services act as a compliment to local area no-fee health clinics and doctors, and to those organizations focused mainly on either economic development or healthcare policy.
