Contribute to elect the president by national popular vote

Al Gore won the popular vote by more than 500,000 votes. Hillary Clinton won it by more than 3 million. But neither became president.

The person with the most votes should win. It's a simple idea, and Daily Kos is working to make it a reality.

Daily Kos is working with allies across the country to pass the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which would guarantee that the person who receives the most votes for president actually becomes president.

The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact is an agreement among several U.S. states and the District of Columbia to award all their respective electoral votes to whichever presidential candidate wins the national popular vote. Once states totaling 270 electoral votes join the compact—which does not require a constitutional amendment, only new state laws—then the next presidential election will be determined by the popular vote.

Daily Kos has been running a major long-term project to help pass the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact through state legislatures across the country since Trump's election in 2016, and five new states have joined the compact since. Now, states whose electoral votes total 196 votes have joined the compact—just 74 from securing the votes needed to elect presidents by the popular vote.
