Lilly Ledbetter Speaks at CSUN

Lilly Ledbetter worked for nearly two decades at a Goodyear Tire plant in Alabama. She brought a complaint against Goodyear after she discovered that for years she had been paid less than male co-workers with the same job. In 2008, the Supreme Court ruled that employees can only file a wage-discrimination complaint within 180 days of the first discriminatory paycheck.

Over the course of her career, she lost more than $200,000 in salary, and even more in pension and Social Security benefits and the Supreme Court decision left others in her situation with no recourse.

On January 29, 2009, President Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act restoring the rights of employees who have been the victims of pay discrimination. Lilly is continuing to speak out to remind us that equal pay for equal work is a continuing struggle in the workplace.
