On August 21, 2013 Dona Ana County Clerk Lynn Ellins began issuing marriage licenses to same-gender couples, affirming the right to marry for all New Mexicans that began with the adoption of a resolution and groundbreaking legal opinion by the City of Santa Fe a few months earlier.
Since the first licenses were issued, five other counties have joined Lynn - Bernalillo, Santa Fe, Valencia, San Miguel, Taos - in issuing more than 500 licenses to same-gender couples across the state.
Now a coalition of Republican legislators have filed suit to stop the issuance of licenses and invalidate every marriage and legal costs are climbing.
County Clerk Lynn Ellins won't send taxpayers the bill to defend his bold action and these new marriages, so we're coming together to endow this legal defense fund to save our marriages.
Funds will be used to cover invoiced legal expenses incurred in the defense of County Clerk Lynn Ellins in Sharer, et. al. v. Ellins.
