I am excited to share the news that I am exploring a run for the California Assembly in 2014.
I live and work in Assembly District 15, which includes the cities of Albany, Berkeley, El Cerrito, El Sobrante, Emeryville, Hercules, Kensington, North Oakland, Piedmont, Pinole, Richmond, and San Pablo. This district is one of the most diverse and progressive districts in the state, and firmly believes that we have a right to a healthy, sustainable environment, good schools and well-paying jobs. These are issues I've been fighting for my entire life.
Thirty years ago, I immigrated to the United States from Korea and grew up working in my family’s small business. Our family didn't have much so everyone had to step up. Watching my family struggle made me realize just how precious and fragile the American Dream is. This experience eventually led me to law school so that I could help other working families.
As general counsel at The Greenlining Institute, I've led several state and national efforts to protect underserved communities, students, and small businesses. My accomplishments include writing and successfully passing legislation promoting opportunities for small businesses, fighting cuts to higher education, and defending laws that protect our environment and create healthier communities.
Advocating on the ground in Sacramento, I've seen first-hand how Sacramento's dysfunction impacts our communities. While I’ve been able to accomplish a lot for our communities from the outside, I believe we can accomplish even greater things together from the inside.
So when I was asked to explore a run for the State Assembly, I had to step up. I'm hoping friends like you will also feel this urgency. I've got a real shot at this and I have the experience needed to get the job done, but only if friends like you help. Please join me.
