Growing up in a poor immigrant family, he experienced homelessness and hunger, eventually enlisting in the Army and serving as a special forces medic in Vietnam. He then became the first in his family to attend college, eventually becoming a trauma surgeon and SWAT team leader, and rising all the way to become United States Surgeon General.
