Secretary Pete Buttigieg served as the 19th United States Secretary of Transportation from 2021 to 2025, nominated by President Biden and confirmed by the Senate 86-13, making him the first openly gay Cabinet secretary in U.S. history. Prior to his cabinet role, he served as the 32nd Mayor of South Bend, Indiana, from 2012 to 2020, earning the nickname "Mayor Pete." Secretary Buttigieg also served as an intelligence officer in the United States Navy Reserve from 2009 to 2017, attaining the rank of lieutenant and deploying to Afghanistan in 2014. As Transportation Secretary, he was the youngest member of the Biden Cabinet and the youngest person ever to hold that office, overseeing major infrastructure investment under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
