Sam is a former smokejumper and union leader, running to make sure working people have a voice in Congress. Having been a wildland firefighter since 2018, Sam previously worked on fire crews in western Montana, as well as at the North Cascades Smokejumper Base in Washington state. Additionally, Sam served as the Vice President of NFFE Local 60, representing 800 Forest Service workers across much of western Montana.

Between fire seasons, Sam has worked tirelessly as an organizer and advocate. He helped build and manage the Montana Coalition to Solve Homelessness, as well as worked with groups like the Montana Library Association, the Montana Innocence Project, and the ACLU of Montana to fight for working people, public services, and civil liberties in Montana.

When thousands of federal employees were illegally fired by the administration last February, Sam stood up for his fellow union members by speaking at a Fight The Oligarchy rally in Missoula to say that public servants will not be silenced. And when the 2025 government shutdown threatened the livelihoods of families across western Montana, Sam and his brothers and sisters put solidarity into action, hosting events to provide meals for furloughed workers and bring attention to the real-life impacts of Congress’s inaction. Now, Sam is running for Congress to continue the fight.

Since launching his campaign earlier this year, Sam has been added to the DCCC’s coveted Red to Blue program. Endorsements include Senator Jon Tester, Governor Steve Bullock, Governor Brian Schweitzer, Republican Governor and former RNC Chair Marc Racicot, the Montana AFL-CIO and over a dozen unions, both the Blue Dog Coalition and the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and well over 30 current and former Montana state legislators, mayors, and city council members including five Republicans.
