hotThe Polk County Democratic Party is proud to welcome Leader Nancy Pelosi as the headliner for our 2018 Spring Dinner on Sunday, May 6 at 6:00 PM at Forte in Downtown Des Moines. Leader Pelosi made history as the first woman to be elected as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives in 2007. She secured passage for the $787 billion Recovery Act in 2009 and the landmark Affordable Care Act in 2010. She made headlines in February 2018 for her 8 hour speech in support of DREAMer immigrants, smashing a 109-year old House record for the longest delivery of a speech. Her record stretches back decades, from stopping George W. Bush’s attempted privatization of Social Security to opposing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in the nineties. A proud grandmother of nine, she has been called the “strongest and most effective speaker of modern times.”
Leader Pelosi will be introduced by former Congressman Leonard Boswell. We will be joined with an Iowa House update from Assistant Minority Leader Brian Meyer, an Iowa Senate update from Senator Pam Jochum, and an update on the fight at the statehouse from Planned Parenthood of the Heartland President Suzanna de Baca. We’ll also be announcing our 2018 Polk County Democrats Volunteer of the Year award winner.
