Don't Mourn - Organize!
$10 this month for the Escambia (FL) Democratic Party.
Last month we raised $2,000 for the Virginia Beach Democratic Committee. They're using the money to "[B]uild a robust precinct captain program to support this year's candidates for the Virginia House of Delegates." As many of you might know, there's a general belief we can flip Virginia in 2018 and by funding one of the most conservative cities in the country we're helping the fight directly to the Republican Party.
In June (month 8) we're heading to another military town, Pensacola, Florida, to support the Escambia Democrats.
Florida is a swing state, but high Republican turnout in the Panhandle was one significant factor in Trump's win. Florida's 1st congressional district is its most conservative and Escambia County is the largest in the FL-01.
There are three factors, however, that give me hope even for a such a deep Red region:
- The policies of the Republican Party are very much in opposition to the interests of Pensacola. Their homophobic policies and rhetoric put the city's substantial LGBTQ tourism at risk, and climate change denialism is dangerous for a city threatened by destructive Gulf Coast weather. On top of that, Florida Governor (and Trump "mini-me") Rick Scott's austerity budget is cutting deeply into local programs. Sadly, we'll have a robust set of issues on which to campaign in 2018.
- Local favorite son, former Congressional representative, and current pundit Joe Scarborough is one of the conservative voices speaking out most strongly against Trump. We're going to keep his words front and center.
- As was true for many of us, 2016 was a wake-up call for Escambia Democrats. They've come out swinging with a reinvigorated Party and fresh volunteers. And yesterday, forty people gave up a beautiful June Saturday to sit in a conference room to take the first steps in learning how to become strong candidates.
These are the local, grassroots efforts we need to support as we work to take back the Congress in 2018!
