Destroying the Department of Education endangers the health and wellbeing of millions of American children. Trump has slashed the DOE workforce by half. Among the first to be fired were those in the Office of Civil Rights, which investigates discrimination and sexual violence in schools, and those in charge of student financial aid, who oversee loans and Pell Grants to ensure millions of students can afford college each year.
But the most devastating cuts are hitting the nation’s most vulnerable children -- students with disabilities. The administration is firing nearly the entire DOE staff responsible for Special Education and Rehabilitation Services, leaving children without the protections and support they are legally owed. Without federal oversight and enforcement, students will be left without the therapies, accommodations, and special services that allow them to learn and thrive.
And there’s more. School nurses and counselors will face widespread layoffs, leaving children without essential health and mental health care at school. School lunch programs that feed millions of low-income students will go unfunded, increasing rates of childhood hunger and malnutrition. And oversight of student safety and rights will all but disappear.
In March, Attorneys General from 20 states and the District of Columbia sued the Trump administration to stop the dismantling of the Department of Education. Now, as Trump’s attacks have only intensified, the fight must escalate, too.
