Right now, the fight over the government shutdown is about one thing: whether working families can afford to stay insured. Republicans are trying to let Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits expire at the end of the year, a move that would send health insurance premiums through the roof for more than 20 million Americans.
Democrats have drawn a line in the sand. They’ve tied reopening the government to renewing the ACA premium tax credits that make health coverage affordable for millions.
The numbers don’t lie. Research from the Kaiser Family Foundation shows that 78% of Americans, Democrats, independents, and even most Republicans, want Congress to extend these tax credits. The people are united, even if Congress isn’t. Democrats have the upper hand in this fight.
What they need now is a loud, clear message from us: Don’t cave. Hold the line.
We fought to expand Medicaid to more than 52,000 women and children in South Dakota last year. We know what it means to win these battles when we stand together.
