Every day this government shutdown drags on, thousands of federal workers and contractors are being pushed closer to eviction, foreclosure, and financial collapse. They have missed paychecks, drained savings, and now many are facing the terrifying possibility of losing their homes because of political gridlock in Washington.
That is why Congress must immediately pass the Federal Employee Civil Relief Act. This simple, humane bill would stop evictions, foreclosures, and car repossessions for federal workers and contractors during this shutdown and for 30 days afterward.
No one should lose their home or their car because politicians cannot agree on a budget.
The bill already has strong support from the National Treasury Employees Union, AFGE, and IAM Union, as well as thousands of families across the country who know what it means to live paycheck to paycheck. It is being led by Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI) and Representative Brendan Boyle (D-PA), but it will take public pressure from all of us to make Congress move.
Federal workers are not bargaining chips. They are the people who deliver our mail, process Social Security checks, protect our national parks, and inspect the food on our tables. They deserve dignity, not eviction notices.
Contribute to Americans for Health and fund the fight to pass the Federal Employee Civil Relief Act to protect federal workers and their families from eviction during this shutdown.
