Four years ago I ran a campaign focused on more housing, less sprawl, and better neighborhoods for all.
Even under overwhelmingly unfavorable circumstances on the City Council, we held off poorly planned sprawl backed by the biggest interests in town, had the City Council unanimously support my ambitious program of smart growth reforms, and made significant progress improving the safety and quality of streets, leaf pickup and street sweeping, urban forestry, street lighting, and other parks and neighborhood services.
But the work isn't done to secure or finalize most of these reforms and other efforts to improve Chico have failed before an unreliable City Council majority. Chico is growing steadily more unaffordable, and a sales tax passed by voters in 2022 primarily to improve roadways is being rapidly diverted and committed elsewhere, especially into salaries and benefits.
I want to keep working as hard as I have been for safer streets, climate resilience, and a more walkable city, and tackle some of these bigger issues: push through a program for local affordability and protect in the long-run, dedicated funding to improve Chico's core infrastructure.
To get there, we need a more aligned City Council.
