The Ella Baker Center and Bonafide are partnering to launch the Affirmative Freedom Support Project -- a mutual aid project to support transgender, gender non-conforming, gender expansive, intersex, nonbinary individuals, and cisgender women coming home after serving prison sentences.
This collaboration will build on Bonafide’s existing Welcome Back Packs and outfit shopping excursions by tailoring its offerings specific to transgender, gender non-conforming, gender expansive, intersex, nonbinary individuals, and cisgender women. This mutual aid includes basic necessities, hygiene products, and gender-affirming clothes. Expanding on the Ella Baker Center’s Freedom Fund, this project will foster meaningful relationships with individuals returning home from incarceration and connect them to welcoming community members.
Transitioning back home is a challenging experience, and this support empowers individuals to own their identities and provides gender-affirming care. We’re not just providing gender-affirming clothing, we’re supporting our folks as they re-learn their wants and needs on the outside.
Supporting these Welcome Back Packs is supporting safe new beginnings.
About our organizations:
The Ella Baker Center organizes with Black, Brown, and low-income people to shift resources away from prisons and punishment, and towards opportunities that make our communities safe, healthy, and strong.
Bonafide is a community of formerly incarcerated people and their families. Bonafide’s mission is to ensure that people affected by incarceration have the material, emotional and advocacy support they need to both integrate into society and build healthy, productive lives going forward.
