Congress is considering adding a ban on state and local legislation to regulate AI in the National Defense Authorization Act, and if it passes, states will be powerless to protect residents from algorithmic discrimination, automated surveillance, deepfakes, and financial exclusion.

This ban is about silencing the public for a decade. It gives AI companies the right to operate without accountability, no transparency, no civil rights enforcement, and no local protections. If AFR and our coalition don’t act now, the consequences will last for a generation.
