Tech billionaires want free rein to control digital payments without oversight, and Congress is helping them by pushing a resolution that would eliminate the CFPB’s rule ensuring that payment apps like Apple Pay, PayPal, Venmo follow the same consumer protection laws as banks.
If this rule is repealed, fraud will go unchecked, accounts can be arbitrarily frozen, and companies will continue collecting and exploiting users’ financial data with no consequences.
The CFPB’s rule is common sense. It simply holds Big Tech accountable by ensuring that non-bank payment platforms follow the same rules as traditional banks. Elon Musk and other billionaires are attacking this rule because it prevents them from exploiting consumers. The Senate just voted to repeal it -- now we need to fight back.
Americans for Financial Reform is leading the charge to protect consumers from fraud, unfair account freezes, and financial surveillance by Big Tech companies. But we need your help to fight back against this industry’s influence in Washington. Your donation will help us organize, advocate, and hold lawmakers accountable.
Contribute to Americans for Financial Reform and fund the fight demanding Congress make banking apps, including Apple, Paypal and Venmo, comply with consumer protections just like every other bank now!
