In a widely read Newsday feature this week, Americans for Financial Reform was featured for sounding the alarm on the dark side of Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) loans.
These short-term installment loans, increasingly offered by stores like Target and Walmart and on Amazon, are marketed as convenient, risk-free ways to pay over time. But as we told Newsday, we’re warning it’s not:

While some shoppers see BNPL as a helpful option, many are blindsided by late fees, bounced payment charges, and mounting debt, often with no real regulation or transparency.
AFR is fighting to change that. We’re pushing for stronger rules and public education to ensure people aren’t trapped in confusing, costly loan schemes just to afford basic necessities. That’s why Newsday came to us, and why supporters like you are critical to our work.
