In 2016, Color Of Change members pressured Airbnb to undergo a civil rights audit after #AirbnbWhileBlack went viral on Twitter. After working with us, Airbnb has released their report publicly quantifying and outlining steps to combat racial discrimination and updated their policy to ban plantation listings on their platform.
The report notes that there was racial disparity when it came to Black people’s ability to successfully book an Airbnb listing in 2021. Black people’s booking success rate was 91.4% compared to white people’s rate at 94.1%. Airbnb is implementing the following interventions to make the booking process more equitable:
But our work is not done. We will continue to hold Airbnb accountable in its rollout of these changes and force other companies to take similar action.
