I'm running for re-election to advance literacy for all DC students! If you haven't learned to read, you can't read to learn. Right now, only 26% of fourth grade students in DC performed at or above the proficient level on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) exam in reading. 74% of DC students are not reading proficiently by 4th grade.

We have a long path forward, but I’m proud of the work I’ve accomplished to advance evidence-based investments to support literacy learning. In collaboration with Councilmember Pinto, I worked to set up a Literacy Task Force, convening DC education agencies to work together around developing recommendations for structured literacy instruction in the District.

I am seeking re-election to continue this work to implement science-of-reading aligned improvements, for example, by improving how we train and equip educators.
As I wrote in an op-ed co-authored with the District’s state superintendent of education, “The good news — and yes, there is good news — is that the solutions are within reach.”
I’ve also partnered with DC reading instructors and school librarians to advance literacy in its various forms, not only reading, but also media/information literacy, environmental literacy, and financial literacy.
I’m grateful to have earned your trust to become the first Asian-American elected to the DC State Board of Education. Your donation today will help me build upon what we’ve accomplished in my first term to continue working to equip DC students with the tools they need to navigate the 21st century.
I am participating in DC's public campaign finance program and not accepting contributions from businesses or PACs. Under the program, DC residents' contributions will be matched 5 to 1. The contribution limit is $20.
Thank you for your support!
