Working people in New York City are struggling to make ends meet. Rent, groceries, childcare, and energy bills have never been higher, yet wages have failed to keep pace. Meanwhile, corporations like Amazon are posting record profits, while workers’ share of the national income is at historic lows. The cost of living has outpaced wages for too long, and it’s time for bold action.
Amazon Labor Union was founded by frontline Amazon workers at JFK8 in Staten Island, New York who refused to accept unsafe working conditions, low pay, and a lack of respect for their labor. From the very beginning, our unionization campaign centered on a single, transformative demand: $30-an-hour starting wage for the lowest-paid Amazon workers. This unprecedented demand was rooted in a simple truth: a minimum wage must be a living wage. The $30-an-hour demand became a rallying point, inspiring Amazon workers nationwide to demand wages that reflect their labor, the profits they generate, and the value they bring to our economy.
Today, ALU is at the forefront of Raise Up NY, a coalition of labor unions, workers’ rights organizations, and community groups advocating for fair pay and economic justice. On March 10th, our campaign “$30 for Our City” officially launches with a rally and press conference at NYC City Hall, as Council Member Sandy Nurse introduces a bill to raise the city’s minimum wage to $30 by 2030.
New York City has long led the fight for fair wages, from the historic Fight for $15 to today’s push for a wage that truly lets workers live with dignity, yet the cost of living keeps climbing while wages fall behind. Mayor Zohran Mamdani, elected on a platform to tackle affordability, has committed to raising the minimum wage to $30 by 2030 but this historic opportunity will only become reality if we stand together, raise our voices, and back the workers on the frontlines of this fight, ensuring that hardworking families can finally share in the wealth they create and secure the economic justice they deserve.
Donate today to stand with Amazon workers and the movement for economic justice. Your donation helps ALU organize workers, amplify their voices, and build the power needed to win $30-an-hour wages and lasting economic security. Together, we can turn this bold demand into reality and ensure that New York City becomes a model for workers everywhere.
