Today, I'm officially launching my campaign for DC State Board of Education, Ward 6, and I'm inviting 50 friends, neighbors, family members, and supporters to become my first 50 Founding Supporters by making a $20 contribution over the next three days.
My journey into education didn't begin in Washington—it began at my mother's kitchen table.
For 33 years, my mother dedicated her life to teaching children, and she always reminded me, "You are smart so you can help someone else." Those words became more than advice—they became my life's purpose.
They led me from teaching in a Title I classroom, to partnering with families through Head Start, to developing federal education policy, and ultimately to becoming a Ward 6 parent committed to ensuring every child has the opportunity to succeed.
I've served education from every seat at the table—as a teacher, parent, school leader, nonprofit executive, and federal education policy leader. Now, I'm ready to bring those experiences to the DC State Board of Education.
If elected, I'll focus on strengthening our schools by:
🍎 Building Strong Family Partnerships
Families deserve meaningful opportunities to help shape decisions before they are made—not after. I'll hold regular Ward 6 listening sessions, meet with PTOs, LSATs, educators, and community organizations, and ensure our community's voices are reflected in my work on the State Board.
📚 Advocating for Transparent and Equitable Investments
Every child deserves access to excellent opportunities, regardless of which public school they attend. I'll advocate for transparency in education funding and work to ensure decisions are centered on the needs of students.
❤️ Supporting the Educators Who Support Our Children
Great schools begin with educators who feel valued and supported. I'll champion policies that strengthen educator retention, improve school climate, and ensure educators have a voice in the conversations that affect their classrooms.
🌱 Investing Early to Build Strong Futures
The strongest investment we can make in student success begins long before kindergarten. I'll advocate for strong early learning opportunities and policies that help every child start school ready to thrive.
🤝 Leading with Transparency and Accountability
You should never have to wonder what your State Board member is doing. I am committed to regular community meetings, open communication, and reporting back to Ward 6 families about the work I'm doing on your behalf.
This campaign isn't about politics.
It's about building stronger schools with our community.
It's about making sure every family feels heard, every educator feels supported, and every child has the opportunity to succeed.
Because I'm participating in DC's Fair Elections Program, your contribution helps build a true grassroots campaign powered by Ward 6 neighbors and families.
Who will be one of the 50 people who can say, "I helped launch this campaign"?I would be honored to have you as one of my Founding 50.
Thank you for believing in this vision and for being part of the very beginning of this journey.
With gratitude,
Dr. Amber Williams
