In 2010 I woke up to what felt like a bomb was going off in my uterus. I was doubled over in pain, bleeding heavily, and terrified because I had no idea what was happening. What’s important to note is that I had been on birth control since I was 12 due to severe, irregular bleeding, but in 2009, I lost my health insurance because I was no longer in school and that meant no more birth control. After multiple hospital and doctor visits, and multiple weeks spent holding myself as I writhed in pain, I was diagnosed with endometriosis.
Thankfully once the Affordable Care Act was passed I was able to be back on health care and back on birth control. Birth control continues to help me manage my endometriosis.
When I imagine not having access to a medicine that helps me function, I am horrified. When I imagine being denied access to an abortion if I have an ectopic pregnancy or a miscarriage, I am infuriated. My soul hurts watching my rights and the rights of others with a uterus come under attack with the overturn of Roe v Wade.
Abortion IS health care!
While I’m fortunate, as of now, to be able to access the care I need, many others are losing that access and finding themselves in dire situations because of it. That’s where the New York Abortion Access Fund (NYAAF) steps in. The New York Abortion Access Fund supports New Yorkers, and people traveling to New York State, access abortion care through financial assistance, case management, and connections to other resources. Not only are they supporting callers from 32 states and 13 countries, but helping those right here in NY as well. While New York is much more abortion friendly than other states, many barriers still exist here. NYAAF directly fills the gaps created by these barriers and has made abortion access a reality for thousands of callers in New York and across the country. "As New York’s only abortion fund, we believe no one should be denied access to an abortion because of where they live or how much money they make."
NYAAF needs your help to bring care to those in need so join me and many others in making sure they get the funds they need to continue their incredible work. Any little bit helps!
