Sarah Trone Garriott is an ordained Lutheran Minister, a mother of two, a local non-profit leader, and a Trump-district State Senator. In 2020, frustrated that her elected leaders weren’t listening to the concerns of her community, Sarah ran for public office and flipped her seat from red to blue. In 2022, as a result of redistricting, Sarah moved to take on Republican State Senate President Jake Chapman and flipped that seat from red to blue. In 2024, she was the only Iowa Senate Democrat to defend her district, even though President Trump won it.
Throughout her service in the State Senate, Sarah has defined herself as an advocate for working families: championing accessible and affordable healthcare, mental health programs, support for public schools, paid family leave, quality childcare, and reproductive rights. Recognized for her pragmatic leadership, Sarah has continuously demonstrated her ability to unite Iowans across party lines. Her commitment extends beyond policy to genuine community engagement, constantly showing up to listen, support, and act on behalf of her constituents.
An ordained minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Sarah has served as a hospital chaplain and a parish pastor. She currently works for the Des Moines Area Religious Council Food Pantry Network as the Coordinator of Interfaith Engagement, bringing diverse religious communities together to help neighbors in need. Sarah and her husband, Will, have two sons and live in West Des Moines.
