Black Lives Matter Boise Chapter (BLM Boise) Founded on May 31, 2020, in response to the murder of George Floyd, BLM Boise is a social and environmental justice organization led by critical criminologists, data scientists, and social scientists. We center an Abolitionist, Womanist perspective working to advance the ideological goals of the Black Lives Matter Grassroots.
Our chapter bridges grassroots activism with academic rigor, transforming this historic movement into a critical criminological think tank. Research & Advocacy BLM Boise investigates systemic injustices, with a current focus on: Policing disparities: Our research reveals that unarmed Black women are more likely to be killed by police than armed white men (Wilson, 2021), despite white men being more frequently armed and more likely to use weapons in crimes. Stop-and-Frisk (Terry Stops): A forthcoming 17-year study challenges the effectiveness of contemporary policing practices. We also have created a map of prisons, and police departments nationwide. Its vastness is maddening.
Environmental justice: Using microspatial GIS mapping, we analyze connections between policing, public health, and environmental contamination. Mission & Impact Our goal is to eliminate systemic inequities by: Providing data-driven insights to inform policy and public discourse. Holding state regulators, corporations, and law enforcement accountable through rigorous research. Serving as a critical resource for the community via BLMBoise.org.
Research shapes policy. Policy shapes society. We stand on the frontlines in the struggle for justice and humanity.
