As you’re preparing to honor the people in your lives who raised and shaped you, we invite you to take a moment to think about the tens of thousands of people languishing in jail simply because they can’t afford bail.
In honor of Mother's Day, Faith & Works is joining in with #FreeBlackMamas, an annual campaign by the National Bail Out collective that seeks to raise awareness about money bail's human and financial costs and emphasize its impact on Black mothers and caregivers.
Since 2017, National Bail Out has partnered with local organizations to free over 700 Black Mamas and caregivers from cages, providing services ranging from long-term housing to grief and trauma counseling.
In the past few months, across the nation, our elected leaders are fanning the flames of fear, baselessly claiming that bail reform poses a threat to safety.
Instead of addressing the root causes, we’re seeing an attack on community bail funds and an increase in pretrial detention populations.
In the face of this, we stand united, knowing precisely what keeps our communities safe. It is not fear-mongering but a collective commitment to solutions.
From now through May 12, Faith & Works will reunite as many Black Mamas and caregivers with their families as possible so they can be home safely in time for Mother’s Day.
To do that, Faith & Works is working to raise $100,000, and they are currently half-way to their goal. We need your help to reunite our families.
