Saturday, August 1st, 4pm Building Political Power for Black Women in WA

Why this matters? Why now?

In 2020, we have a historic opportunity to triple the number of Black women in the Washington State legislature, and elect the first Black member of the Washington State Senate since the indomitable Senator Rosa Franklin retired in 2010.

The legislators elected in fall 2020 will face a greater challenge than perhaps any in the history of our state.

  • They will decide how Washington responds to the long-term impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on Washington state’s education, healthcare, housing, and environmental systems.
  • They will decide how Washington will meet the reinvigorated demands for justice for Black lives.
  • They will decide if the state’s funding deficit will be addressed with cuts that disproportionately harm communities of color, or with progressive taxation that ensures every Washingtonian contributes their fair share to the public good.
  • They will decide who is appointed as redistricting commissioners to draw the lines that will allocate political power across our state for the next decade.

In politics, they say “if you are not at the table, then you are on the menu.”

We need Black communities and Black women specifically at the table in Olympia,

this year more than ever.
