On November 2, voters in Georgia–one of the most important swing states in the country–will go to the polls to vote in the 2025 Georgia Public Service Commission election. Here are some important facts about this election:
Why do these obscure elections matter? Well, for one thing, public utilities, especially energy, are actually pretty important, and Georgia is a decently-sized state. However, for our purposes as a national organization, this race matters because a Democratic victory here would show a rejection of Donald Trump's presidency in one of the most important swing states in the country. That would send a wave of Republican incumbents in Congress heading for the exits, discourage stronger Republican candidates from entering any 2026 campaign, and solidify the narrative that voters around the country are rejecting MAGA governance.
Can the Democratic candidates for Georgia Public Service Commissioner win? Absolutely. Last year, Donald Trump only won Georgia by 2.18 points over Kamala Harris, 50.48% to 48.30%. However, according to date compiled by The Downballot, across 40 special elections for state legislature and House of Representatives held so far in 2025, Democrats have performed a mean of 15 points better than Harris, and a median of 13 points better. While this swing has likely been smaller in a southern state like Georgia (there are fewer swing voters in the south than in other regions of the country), the national anti-Trump, pro-Democratic swing seen so far in 2025 should be enough to carry both Alicia Johnson and Peter Hubbard to victory.
To make supporting the Democratic candidates in this election easy for you, I have created this ActBlue page, added both Alicia Johnson and Peter Hubbard to it, and also added Bowers News Media PAC. On the page, the amount that you donate to each candidate, and to Bowers News Media PAC, can be adjusted. To find out more about the Democratic candidates, you can visit the campaign websites of Alicia Johnson and Peter Hubbard by clicking on the links on their names. You can also donate to them directly on their websites.
Please, split a contribution between the Democratic candidates for Georgia Public Service Commission, Alicia Johnson and Peter Hubbard, and also to Bowers News Media PAC. Let's prove to the country that even southern swing states like Georgia are rejecting Donald Trump, and send a wave of Republicans in Congress heading to the exits in the process.
