In terms of visibility, the campaigns for governor in Virginia and New Jersey are perhaps the marquee political matchups of 2025.
It is important that Democrats win both of these elections. Virginia and New Jersey are both lean blue states, and so a GOP victory in either state would be taken by both congressional Republicans and the Trump administration as a vindication of the way they are running the country.
Both races are for open seats. In Virginia, where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin is term limited, the Democratic nominee is Abigail Spanberger. In New Jersey, where the Democrat Phil Murphy is term limited, the Democratic nominee is Mikie Sherrill.
