Rep. Mikie Sherrill, a Navy veteran, is the Democratic nominee for governor in New Jersey, the election for which is on November 4. You can visit Sherrill's campaign website, here.
Sherrill holds a real, but somewhat tenuous, six-point in lead in the latest polling average from 270toWin. That is probably enough for her to win in November, unless something surprising happens.
So, lo and behold, out of the blue, someone at the National Archives gave Sherrill's entire, almost entirely unredacted military file to an ally of her Republican opponent. A veteran's military file is not supposed to be released to the public until 62 years after the completion of their military service. However, under the Trump administration, apparently Republican campaigns get that information early now, at least when it comes to their Democratic opponents.
Given the consistently illiberal, norm-violating, and often illegal behavior of the Trump administration, I do not believe that this happened accidentally, even though I admit I have no proof of that other than my suspected motive. I'm pretty sure what going on here is the Trump administration trying to use stuff in Sherrill's file in the hopes that they can swing this close-ish race toward Republicans in the final weeks of the campaign.
And you know, it would indeed be pretty bad if Sherrill lost this race, and Republicans were able to flip New Jersey red. Basically every election in 2025 has gone very well for Democrats, from Wisconsin to Pennsylvania to Iowa. Further, Democrats are pretty likely to flip Virginia blue on November 4. All of this is helping to build a big media narrative that voters are rejecting Donald Trump's second term, something which actually will make it easier for Democrats to retake Congress next year. However, a Republican victory in New Jersey might actually stop all that.
