So far in 2025, Democrats have had a very strong election year. Consider:
Liberal candidate Susan Crawford won a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court by 10 points, even though she was heavily outspent by Elon Musk, and even though Kamala Harris lost Wisconsin in 2024.
Across 40 special elections for state legislative and House of Representative seats so far in 2025, Democrats have performed a mean of 15 points better than Kamala Harris did in 2024, and a median of 13 points better.
Three of these special elections saw Democrats flip Republican-held seats, all of which Trump had won by double digits, from red to blue.
This is all great, but one thing Democrats have not done so far is to flip partisan control of an entire state.
However, that can change after the November 4th election for governor in Virginia. Republican Glenn Youngkin currently holds that office, but Democrat Abigail Spanberger is well-positioned to take it back for Team Blue.
Republicans only narrowly won the governorship in the 2021 Virginia elections, but now there is a good chance they are about to get swamped by a big blue wave. Not only is Virginia normally a lean-blue state, and not only are Democrats vastly outperforming their 2024 vote totals in elections around the country, but polling shows Spanberger with a roughly 8 point lead in the gubernatorial election.
