The California Innocence Project Foundation (CIPF) provides support to innocence organizations and other legal nonprofit organizations seeking to free wrongfully convicted individuals from prison, and provides legal support services on a pro bono basis to indigent individuals. In addition, CIPF provides exoneree support to formerly incarcerated individuals upon their release from prison.
Through its work, CIPF also informs the public and those in the criminal legal system about the causes of wrongful convictions, the lack of support services available to exonerated individuals, and ways in which the criminal legal system might be improved to prevent future miscarriages of justice. Through education on wrongful conviction issues—issues such as eyewitness misidentification, shaken baby syndrome, faulty forensic science, ineffective assistance of counsel, and police and prosecutorial misconduct—CIPF can effect drastic change in the criminal legal system, leading to the systematic prevention of future wrongful incarcerations.
