At least 39 migrants died and 29 were gravely injured recently due to a fire at the Instituto Nacional de Migración (National Immigration Institute) detention center in Ciudad Juárez. Increasingly aggressive measures on migration and enforcement from the Biden Administration have led to an overcrowded and under-resourced system at the border, increasing the risk for entirely preventable tragedies like this one.
Your donation will go toward helping survivors of this disaster get access to legal and humanitarian services so they can receive desperately needed medical care in the U.S. Here are the organizations working to support migrants from the tragedy:
Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center
is a 501(c)(3) non-profit providing high-quality legal services to low income immigrants. Since its founding in 1987, Las Americas has served close to 50,000 persons, with a strong focus on women, children, families, the LGBTQ community and asylum seekers.
Diocesan Migrant and Refugee Services (DMRS): DMRS is the only full-service immigration legal aid clinic serving low-income immigrants and refugees residing in the southwestern United States.
Hope Border Institute: The Hope Border Institute (HOPE) brings the perspective of Catholic social teaching to bear on the realities unique to our U.S.-Mexico border region. Through a robust program of research and policy work, leadership development and action, they work to build justice and deepen solidarity across the borderlands.
