Climate Hawks Vote is endorsing Pine Tree Power, a bold ballot initiative to transform Maine’s for-profit utility system into clean, people-owned power.
Electric utilities are the key to implementing the Inflation Reduction Act. But almost all of Maine’s electricity is delivered via two for-profit utilities owned by multinational conglomerates. The utilities have made fortunes, blocked clean power, and left Mainers suffering through power outages and blackouts.
This November, Maine voters will be asked to vote on Ballot Question 3, establishing the non-profit Pine Tree Power Company to buy out the for-profit utilities. A Pine Tree Power win could spark a wave of similar ballot initiatives. It could prompt greedy for-profit utility companies to clean up their act.
