The annual UN Conference of Parties — or COP, this year is COP28 — is always a spectacle. Nations fly in to make promises. Green activists fly in to make noise. Other green activists stay home and draft and sign petitions begging for a fair deal. Negotiators work past the eleventh hour, release some text with promises down the road, everyone cheers, and everyone flies back. And then none of the promises are kept.
This year's COP meeting is worse. COP28 is corrupt. The fossil fuel lobbyists have infiltrated the process. Now Al Jaber wants to use COP28 to make oil deals with other countries. President Biden isn't even attending, choosing to stay home and light his Christmas tree instead.
That’s why we focus on building political power for the climate movement right here in the United States. And we win our races.
