Angela Alsobrooks is running for the Senate seat being vacated by the retiring Sen. Ben Cardin (D). She faces popular former Governor Larry Hogan (R). When Hogan announced his candidacy for this seat, alarm bells rang for progressives who had thought this would be an easy seat to defend. With the change at the top of the presidential ticket for Democrats, Hogan’s chances of flipping this seat became less favorable. However, it is still expected to be a tough race for Alsobrooks.

Alsobrooks was the first woman to be elected Prince George’s County State’s Attorney. Under her tenure, violent crime dropped by 50 percent and she established a first-of-its-kind unit to investigate and prosecute police and official misconduct.

In 2018, Alsobrooks was elected Prince George’s County Executive, the first woman to hold the position and the first Black woman elected to the office of County Executive in Maryland history. She focused on creating jobs and growing economic opportunity; investing in education and building 10 new schools and breaking ground on 8 more; expanding access to health care, mental health and addiction treatment; youth outreach; and making sure people are safe.

Alsobrooks faced a tough primary against sitting Congressman and self-funder David Trone (D). Despite investing $62 million of his own money, Alsbrooks easily won the primary by 10 percent. Alsobrooks had the support of most of the state’s Democratic establishment, including Governor Wes Moore, Sen. Chris Van Hollen, and Reps. Jamie Raskin and Steny Hoyer.

Alsobrooks supports arms control and opposes wasteful and unnecessary nuclear weapons programs. She also supports a diplomacy-first foreign policy that addresses challenges actually facing us in the 21st century, like climate change.
