Sen. Tammy Baldwin was first elected to Congress in 1998 as a member of the House of Representatives and Wisconsin’s first female member of Congress. She was elected to the Senate in 2012 and became Wisconsin’s first woman and the first openly gay member elected to the Senate. Council for a Livable World has endorsed Sen. Baldwin in each of her Senate races.
Sen. Baldwin has committed her life’s work to public service because she has a deep commitment to making a difference in the lives of Wisconsin’s working families. In the proud tradition of Wisconsin’s state motto, Forward, she believes that we must always work together to help provide fairness, equality, and economic opportunity for all.
Sen. Baldwin has a strong history on Council issues. She was one of the early House opponents of the war in Iraq and voted for early withdrawal of American troops from both Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2020, Sen. Baldwin joined 23 of her Senate colleagues voting to cut the Department of Defense budget by 10%. She also co-sponsored Sen. Chris Van Hollen’s (D-MD) legislation in 2021 barring funding for the nuclear-armed sea-launched cruise missile (SLCM-N).
