Ami Bera has represented California’s 7th Congressional District, located in Sacramento County, since 2013. In 2020, he was reelected 57-43%. But redistricting means he will run in the newly redrawn 6th District, which includes about 50% new constituents.
Rep. Bera is currently a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, where he serves as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, Central Asia, and Nonproliferation. He is also a senior member on the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. He is the longest-serving Indian American in Congress.
He earned both his B.S. and M.D. from University of California, Irvine. During his twenty-year medical career, he practiced internal medicine, served as Chief Medical Officer of Sacramento County, and was clinical professor of medicine and assistant dean of admissions and outreach at University of California, Davis.
Rep. Bera has had a very strong voting record on our issues throughout his time in Congress and believes that American security is best served in a world free of nuclear weapons. He has been a strong advocate for taking steps to avoid a new nuclear arms race, to make further reductions in our nuclear arsenal, and to address the biggest WMD proliferation and terrorism threats facing our nation. He also believes that while we should challenge many Chinese policies, there are opportunities to work with China, along with our allies and partners, on issues such as global health and climate change.
