In 2020, Christy Smith lost an extremely tight race to Rep. Mike Garcia by only 333 votes out of almost 339,000 votes cast. Smith is running again in what is sure to be a nail-biter in a race that redistricting has made more favorable for Democrats, one of the best red-to-blue prospects across the country.
In California’s June top two primary system, Smith was easily nominated as the Democratic candidate to once again challenge Garcia, who has repeated Donald Trump’s election lies and voted against the formation of a House committee to investigate the Jan. 6 insurrection.
Smith currently serves on a state-wide environmental policy council, she was first elected to the California State Assembly in November 2018. Before that, she served two terms as a governing board member of the Newhall School District and was elected to the school board in 2009.
After graduating from UCLA, she served as an analyst at the U.S. Department of Education. She supports immediate and aggressive climate measures that honor our commitment to the global community to be part of the solution to climate change.
