Jessica Cisneros is running to represent Texas' 28th Congressional District, which includes parts of San Antonio and extends south to the border with Mexico.
Cisneros first challenged Rep. Henry Cuellar, one of the most hawkish Democrats in Congress, in 2020 in a race that targeted “Trump’s favorite Democrat.” She lost a close primary election 52-48%.
In the March 2022 primary, the two candidates competed again with Cuellar finishing narrowly ahead 48-47%, a margin of 700 votes that triggered a special May 24 runoff election.
Cisneros earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin and her law degree from the University of Texas School of Law, where she specialized in immigration law. Cisneros' career experience includes working as an attorney and an immigrant rights advocate, and clerking at the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in San Antonio.
She opposes new kinds of nuclear weapons because they are unnecessary and do not add to the U.S. deterrent. She also argues that Pentagon spending is too high and supports U.S. reentry into the Iran nuclear deal.
Cisneros has said, “I am a major proponent of using diplomacy, influence, and trade relationships to soothe tensions and to make progress as much as possible on human rights” and fully supports leaning into all diplomatic means to dismantle nuclear weapons programs at home and abroad.
