Rep. Angie Craig, in her second try for Congress, won an upset victory over former conservative talk show host Jason Lewis with 53% of the vote. She became the first Democrat to represent the 2nd district since it assumed its current configuration as a district in 2003.
She was the first woman to be elected from this district and first openly LGBTQ person elected to Congress from Minnesota.
Prior to being elected to Congress, Craig worked at St. Jude Medical from 2005 through 2017, most recently as head of Global Human Resources.
Rep. Craig announced for the 2nd district seat in 2015 prior to Rep. John Kline’s retirement announcement. She cleared an early endorsement challenge, but lost by fewer than 7,000 votes to Jason Lewis.
In 2018, after a competitive endorsement race, she defeated Lewis, and became the first openly lesbian mother to be elected to Congress, the first woman to be elected in Minnesota’s 2nd district, and the first openly LGBTQ person elected to Congress from Minnesota. She received 52.6% of the vote, winning three of the six counties in the district.
This year, her most likely opponent is Tyler Kistner, who served nine years in the Marine Corps before announcing for Congress.
Rep. Craig currently serves on the House Agriculture, and Transportation and Infrastructure committees.
