Kirsten Engel is challenging first-term Rep. Juan Ciscomani in a seat she almost won in 2022, missing it by just 1.4 percent last cycle. Engel spent five years in the Arizona state legislature, representing a significant portion of this congressional district.

Engel is an environmental law professor at the University of Arizona. She previously held positions in the Massachusetts Office of Attorney General and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency before moving to Arizona. Climate change is a major issue for Arizonans and will be a central issue in what will be a tight race for control of this district in 2024.

Engel filed an amicus brief in the very first case in which the U.S. Supreme Court recognized greenhouse gas emissions contribute to climate change. She helped force paint manufacturers to include warning labels about the hazards of exposure to lead-paint dust. And, she oversaw a brownfield renovation program to cleanup and restore contaminated waste sites.

Kirsten Engel supports new arms control negotiations, even in times of tension. She also opposes new nuclear weapons, like the SLCM-N, and understands that there is no winning a nuclear conflict.
