Sara Gideon, the Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, is an excellent candidate who can defeat four term-incumbent Senator Susan Collins.

She has is the speaker of the Maine House of Representatives and has united most progressives in the state and nationally behind her campaign.

Sen. Collins is now one of the most unpopular Senators in the country, and after her vote in 2018 to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, funds were set up to give to her 2020 opponent, even before Gideon got in the race.

Gideon is a strong advocate of nuclear arms control agreements. Earlier this year, Gideon supported a resolution in Maine’s House calling on the federal government to renounce the option of using nuclear weapons first, end the President’s unchecked authority to launch a nuclear attack, cancel the plan to replace the entire U.S. arsenal with enhanced weapons, and pursue verifiable agreements among nuclear-armed states to eliminate their nuclear arsenals.

Collins, on the other hand, has been a strong and consistent supporter of building more nuclear weapons.

Despite her drop in popularity, Senator Collins will be a tough candidate to beat and most political analysts rate the race a toss-up.
