Andy Kim is a former diplomat and Rhodes Scholar who advised former President Barack Obama on ISIS and Iraq. He won an upset race in 2018 by 50%-49% against an incumbent Republican in a race that wasn’t called until mail-in ballots were counted after election day. He had the strong support of Council for a Livable World.
Kim worked at the White House on countering terrorism, advised the Secretary of Defense and the Pentagon on national security, and served in Afghanistan as a strategic adviser to Generals David Petraeus and John Allen. He earned his doctoral degree in international relations from Oxford University.
Kim has been a House leader on national security issues since his election and named a Co-Chair of the House Democratic National Security Task Force. He is a member of the House Armed Services Committee.
He faces a tough race against a former Burlington County Freeholder who was the youngest woman elected country-wide in the state in 2015. The race is considered a toss-up as President Trump won the district by five points in 2016 and is favored to carry the district again.
