Ben Ray Luján is in a strong position to fill retiring Democratic New Mexico Senator Tom Udall’s seat next year. After six terms in the House of Representatives, Luján currently serves as the Assistant Speaker and is the highest-ranking Hispanic in Congress. He twice served at chair of the House Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
While Luján faces primary opposition, his polling and fundraising numbers show him well-positioned in both the primary and general election. He has rallied important leaders and organizations behind his candidacy in New Mexico and around the country.
New Mexico has a higher percentage of Latino residents than any other state, which, after two very close presidential elections in the early 2000's, has since tipped toward the Democrats. Democrats soundly beat Republicans in 2018, and Democrats now control every statewide office and each congressional seat.
Luján has a solid record on nuclear and arms control issues. In House vote this year, he has voted against building a new, low-yield nuclear weapon for submarines, supported extending the New START nuclear reductions treaty, and endorsed prohibiting U.S. military action against Iran without prior Congressional approval.
