New England is the scene of some of this election’s hottest Senate contests. Council for a Livable World is backing three candidates from the region who are critical to a progressive majority.

Sara Gideon of Maine is challenging incumbent Senator Susan Collins. Collins’ inconsistent voting record over the last five years has reminded Maine voters that on key issues, including national security, Collins has not been looking out for them. Now, this seat has been listed as “up for grabs” by political experts. Sara Gideon, the Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, is a strong and popular candidate with a passion for nuclear arms control. I believe she can defeat Sen. Collins.

Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire is a history maker: she is the first woman in U.S. history to serve as a Governor and U.S. Senator. She is also the only woman currently serving on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and the only person to serve on both the foreign relations committee and the Senate Armed Services Committee. She has been a constant advocate for our issues, and we have been proud to endorse her in each of her Senate campaigns. She may now face a very controversial opponent: Corey Lewandowski, President Trump’s former campaign manager. It is critical that we fight to retain her Senate seat.

Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts has been the most prominent congressional leader on behalf of nuclear arms control and non-proliferation for decades. From leading the fight for a freeze on new nuclear weapons in the 1980s to his introduction of bills to cut the nuclear weapons budget and protect arms control agreements this year, he has always been a steadfast leader on our issues in Congress. We need his voice in Congress, and he needs our support.
