With the Trump administration is widely blamed for its belated and inept response to the Covid-19 pandemic, attempts to militarize U.S. streets and continued blunders with allies overseas, the opportunity for national security progressives to take control of the Senate in 2021 is coming up roses.


In Maine, Sara Gideon (D), Maine’s House speaker, has overcome incumbent Sen. Susan Collins' months-long campaigning advantage and four terms in office to pull into a narrow lead in polls and fundraising.


Kentucky’s Amy McGrath (D) has caught up to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R), the killer of progressive legislation, in fundraising and is close in the polls.


Retired NASA astronaut and combat veteran Mark Kelly (D) of Arizona is running ahead of the incumbent Senator in both fundraising and in public opinion polls, producing major alarms in Republican ranks.


If these three challengers and others win in November, the Senate next year could vote to block war with Iran and head off new and unneeded nuclear weapons, while working to resurrect abandoned nuclear arms-control treaties.
